Parents of children born in Nebraska in 2021 will soon receive a letter from State Treasurer John Murante within the next month.

Murante tells KLIN News, “The letter will let them known their children are automatically enrolled in Nebraska’s College Savings Program and they have a seeded deposit of $50. This is a way to kick start college savings and a way to have families start talking about saving over the long term for the ever growing cost of a college education.”

Murante says this is the second year for the Meadowlark Program and they have seen a tremendous amount of interest in opening additional college savings accounts. It has been a tremendous success.

The Meadowlark Program started in 2020. It was designed to help families get a head start on future educational expenses. Any child born in Nebraska on or after January 1st of 2021 is eligible to receive the one time Meadowlark seed contribution. There is no need for families to enroll and they are not required to pay extra costs or complete paperwork.

Children can use the contribution for education expenses when they enroll in college.
