Omaha State Senator Justin Wayne’s motion to override the veto of Governor Pete Ricketts decision to not apply for a second round of federal funding for rental assistance totaling $120 million failed in a legislative vote Tuesday afternoon.

Ricketts had stated the state has nearly $30 million of unused Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program funds.

Senator Wayne’s LB-1073 would have required Ricketts to to apply for the emergency rental assistance under the federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

After several hours of debate, the final vote was 29 – 16. A total of 33 votes were needed to override the veto.
