New State Driver’s Manual Includes Expanded Section On Traffic Stops

By Tom Stanton Apr 4, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Nebraska’s new drivers manual includes more in-depth advice on how to behave when someone is stopped by a police officer. Steve Dostal is President of All-Metro Driving School and tells KLIN News that kind of information is long overdue.

“Seems to me we could have prevented some of those issues around the country if people would have known some of these things,” Dostal says.

Dostal says the updated “Police Stop” section is 2G in the manual.  It instructs drivers to turn off the engine and audio devices, turn on interior lights at night to help with visibility, keep your hands on the wheel and if you have questions, respectfully ask the officer to clarify.  “If you disagree, don’t prolong the contact by arguing.  They are encouraging people to ask questions.”

He says this new information is something drivers, police officers and driver’s education instructors need to work on.  “It’s really going to help people because it’s a stressful situation when you get pulled over.  Now the policeman’s going to be up front and he’s going to give you the details about what happened.”
