Flint Hills Burn Impact On Nebraska Air Quality

By Karla James Mar 28, 2022 | 3:04 PM

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy report the controlled burns in Kansas and Oklahoma for the management of prairie and rangelands may impact the air quality in Nebraska.

An advisory of possible moderate air impact has been issued for the evening of March 28th through the morning of March 29th for south and south central Nebraska. Smoke will possibly affect areas south of and between North Platte and Kearney. Areas to the north of that region may also experience smoke impact.

During yellow category- or moderate conditions, unusually sensitive groups should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion. These advisories help citizens protect their health by alerting them to days where outdoor activities should be reduced or avoided to minimize exposure to smoke.

Advisories are based on data provided by several sources, smoke plume modeling, and from air quality monitors in Lincoln, Omaha, Bellevue, Beatrice, Grand Island and Scottsbluff.
