Lincoln firefighters battled a two alarm fire Wednesday night. At approximately 9:30 pm crews responded to Carroll Supply at 3600 W O Street after a passer-by reported smoke from a warehouse.
LFR’s Nancy Crist says crews initially went inside, but had to change operations to a defensive attack due to high heat and instability of the large building. She says firefighters faced several challenges in battling the fire. Crews had difficulty accessing the building due to fencing and a large amount of surplus material on the outside of it. The closest hydrant was across O Street so the street was shut down for easier access.
Crist says no fire alarms were sounding and there was no sprinkler system in place. LFR rotated crews through the night and will continue to have some presence throughout the day Thursday to make sure the fire does not re-ignite.
Lincoln Police arrived at the scene the time LFR arrived. LPD responded to a motion sensor inside the building. Crist says, “It would take a pretty long burning fire for a motion detector to be eventually set off so was cooking in there for quite a while before it actually created smoke.”
There were no injuries reported and the cause is not yet known. The building is considered a total loss. It is next to the US Army Reserve Center and North across O street from the Lancaster County Detention Center. The business’s Facebook page says they carry a wide variety of products for both residential and commercial projects.
