A reminder from the Lancaster County Treasurer. The first half of the 2021 property taxes are due on March 31st.
Treasurer Rachel Garver tells KLIN News if payments are late interest will be added. She says, “Interest is charged on the amount that is late at 14%. We don’t get to choose that. State Statute dictates that we have to charge that interest. If you go beyond the delinquency for 2021 and are late on the first Monday of March 2023, there is a tax sale and people can buy the taxes. They buy the delinquency and they earn the 14% from then on. There are very few people that happens to, less than 1%. We give plenty of notice by mail and on their billing statement. We don’t want anyone to go into the tax sale. If they don’t pay on the tax sale, after three plus years, there is a mechanism where the person who bought the tax sale can take the property. That is very rare.”
There are several ways to pay:
· Online at lancaster.ne.gov/treasurer (Service Fee’s apply, Electronic checks are FREE)
· Electronic Home Bill Pay
· Over the Phone- call 402-441-7425
· Mail in-postmark on or before March 31st, 2022
