2 Loaded Handguns Found During Traffic Stop

A Lincoln Police officer spotted a Chrysler 200 driving in the 100 block of Centennial Mall North around 1:40 a.m. Friday with no headlights on.

The officer stopped the vehicle at 14th and O Street and saw an open beer can inside. There were two people inside and both were asked to exit the vehicle. The officer then saw the grip of a handgun between the driver’s seat and the center console. The gun was a loaded .380 caliber handgun.

A search of the vehicle turned up a 9 mm loaded handgun under the front passenger seat and .3 grams of marijuana in the passenger door pocket.

The passenger, 29 year old BJ Rice gave offers several false names before they found out he had been convicted of felony charges in North Carolina. Rice was booked for possessing a firearm by a prohibited person, providing false information to a police officer, possession of marijuana – less than 1 ounce, and possessing an open container of alcohol.

The driver, 23 year old Lela Shanks was booked for carrying a concealed weapon, no headlights, and no driver’s license on her person.
