Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill on Wednesday that would require employers to offer a vaccination exemption. The bill would let workers claim religious or health exemptions to employer vaccinate mandates. Lawmakers advanced it through the first of three required votes.
Senator John Arch says the legislation is specific to COVID-19. “Not to other vaccinations, not getting into school immunizations,” Arch says. “It is a clarifying statement to employers that these are exemptions that are allowed.”
An earlier proposal would have let employees claim vaccine exemptions due to moral, ethical, or philosophical beliefs or convictions. The Department of Health and Human Services would provide either a medical or religious exemption for employees who do not consent to the vaccine requirement from their employer.
