The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee Thursday heard comments on a bill that would authorize the conceal carry of weapons without a permit.
State Senator Tom Brewer introduced the bill. He says, “My purpose is simply to make it so that a person who has never done anything wrong and wishes to protect himself or the family can do that.”
This would not change current law impacting weapons and convicted felons.
Many spoke in opposition, including Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins.
Ewins testified, “Without a permitting process and training, you will have individuals carrying without the proper skills necessary to assess a situation and determine when lethal force is lawful.” She went on to say that calling 911 is a much better option as they are trained to handle every situation.
Ewins also stated the Police Chief’s Association of Nebraska and the Police Officers Association of Nebraska also oppose the bill.
Testimony lasted three hours.
