There are two monoclonal antibodies but only one is effective in the fight against the Omicron variant. Today, CHI Health reported there is a shortage of that antibody.
Dr. Renuga Vivekanandan is an infectious disease specialist and said, “That monoclonal we get from the state department. The state department gets it from the federal government and the supply is very limited.”
During the short supply, they are prioritizing those who will get the antibody and it will be limited to the most vulnerable population. That includes those with organ transplants, heart attacks or with diabetes.
Vivekanandan says it will be another three to four weeks before they see more supplies. The antibodies helps prevent serious cases of COVID-19 from getting worse.
CHI Health recommends those 2 years of age and older wear masks while in public. If you are waiting for test results and you have symptoms, you should isolate until the results are back. If positive, isolate for five days or until symptoms are gone and then mask in public for another five days.
Health officials also expect to see higher case numbers over the next three to four weeks.
