Lincoln Police say they are seeing an uptick in car thefts and they are reminding owners to not leave them running to warm up.  Assistant Chief Jason Stille the latest incident happened Tuesday night near 61st and Vine.

LPD says the victim reported that his 2015 black Volkswagen was left running unattended for about 10 minutes   When he came out around 8:00 p.m. the car was gone.

About three hours later officers were called to the area of 63rd and “X” Streets on a report of a vehicle left in a driveway.  Stille says it was the same vehicle reported stolen from the home on Vine Street.

“This is fortunate we ended up finding it.  Sometimes these vehicles stay gone for a period of time and that’s a big inconvenience for folks, so just as a reminder it’s not a good idea to leave your car running to warm up,” Stille says.

Since the first of the year LPD has investigated 614 reports of stolen vehicles.  Of those, 79 were reported to have been left running.
