Boy Scouts Offering Free Christmas Tree Pickup Service

By Tom Stanton Dec 23, 2021 | 3:30 PM

If you’re looking to get rid of your Christmas trees, Boy Scout Troop 8 is again taking reservations for free pickup. Brooks Rushman is committee chair and says trees should be placed in front of your house by 9 a.m. on December 31 and January 1,2,8 and 9.

“They get dropped off at City recycling sites and will be ground up for mulch,” Rushman says.  He’s asking residents to keep the trees away from the normal trash pickup to prevent them from going to the landfill.

Rushman says this is their seventh year of doing the pickup service and says reservations continue to grow.  “Last year we had over 1,200 reservations and just over 1,400 total trees that we recycled.”

The City will also provide Christmas tree drop-off sites December 25 through Monday, January 17 at these locations:

  • Ballard Park, 3901 North 66th St.
  • Holmes Lake Park, South 70th and Normal streets, parking lot west of north softball field
  • Oak Lake Park, three blocks south of Cornhusker on North First Street
  • Tierra Park, South 29th Street and Tierra Drive
  • Seng Park at University Place, North 50th and Garland streets
  • Woods Park, South 31st and “J” streets, southeast corner of the parking lot

All decorations, tinsel, lights, skirts, disposal bags and stands must be removed from trees. This is the 35th year for the City’s tree recycling service. The effort is a collaboration between the LTU Solid Waste Management Division and the Parks and Recreation Department.
