Huskers Ink Smaller Class, Add 13 Scholarship Players

By Kaleb Henry Dec 15, 2021 | 8:38 PM

Nebraska football has a new batch of players.

The Huskers signed 13 scholarship players Wednesday as the early signing period got underway. That number is just over half of the allowed total program’s can sign—25.

“I think the days of signing 25 kids on signing day and going to the next signing day and signing 25 are probably over,” coach Scott Frost said. “There are extra years with COVID and the transfer portal possibilities and other things. It is kind of a moving target every time.

“Our goal is to try and be as nimble as we can through all of those changes and adjustments to college football and try to accumulate the best players we can and put the best team together as we can.”

One of the additions in the class is quarterback Richard Torres out of Texas.

“I am really selective with quarterbacks,” Frost said. “Richie goes to a school where I do not think recruiters go through as much as some other places and in my opinion was a little bit under the radar. I think he has got elite arm talent. He got hurt this year but he will be back as an early enrollee and ready for spring.

“Especially with Coach (Mark) Whipple coming in and some of the things that we are thinking about doing, I think he is going to fit in really well and I cannot wait to work with him.”

A trio of Nebraska-based players were added to the program: Jake Appleget (Lincoln Southwest), Ernest Hausmann (Columbus), and Gage Stenger (Millard South).

“We do not want to miss out on really good athletes that we think can develop into really good players for us especially here in the state of Nebraska,” Frost said.

Four walk-ons were also announced Wednesday: Cooper Hausman (Norris), Luke Lindenmeyer (Papillion-La Vista), Brady Weas (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), and Charlie Weinrich (Leawood, Kan.).
