Gold Coin Found In Lincoln Salvation Army Red Kettle

By Karla James Dec 8, 2021 | 2:19 PM

The Salvation Army is familiar with odd items that people drop into their red kettles.

Major Mark Anderson tells KLIN News, “We actually have all kinds of oddities that end up in the kettle from buttons to paper clips to aspirin because it is in your pocket and  you just empty your change so we do get some odd things from time to time.”

Anderson says while opening kettles on Wednesday they found a 2021 gold Buffalo Coin valued between $1,850 and $1,950.

Anderson says, “We are absolutely thrilled and thankful to the anonymous donor who gave this coin to us. They kind of gave us a heads up that they would be dropping something into a bucket someplace and it is absolutely wonderful to receive this. This will help us on our way. We are a little behind so we are hoping to catch up and this will help.”

This is the Salvation Army’s first gold coin and the most valuable donation in a kettle this season.

Their goal is $625,000.
