People’s City Mission Almost Ready For Thanksgiving Day

By Karla James Nov 17, 2021 | 3:41 PM

Lincoln’s People’s City Mission is planning on serving 400 to 500 meals on Thanksgiving Day. Pastor Tom Barber says this meal is not just for the city’s homeless but to anyone in the public who would like to attend.

Barber says, “If they (the public) want to come to the Mission, they certainly can do that. Everyone is welcome.” They start serving the turkey and all the fixings at 11 a.m. and will continue through 2 p.m. For those who can’t make it to the mission or are not comfortable being around crowds, they also have to-go meals so no one has to go without. Barber doesn’t want anyone to be alone or forgotten on the holiday.

There is another option for those who can’t afford to prepare a big meal this year. Barber says, “This Saturday, we will be handing out 500 turkeys and all the fixings with our families over at our Help Center and that will feed about 2,000 who are not homeless but are struggling financially.”

This isn’t possible without the help of volunteers. Barber says there are still a few slots left for those who want to come and help on Thanksgiving Day. He says, “Christmastime, we don’t have as many volunteers as we do on Thanksgiving. So that is also a great time on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. People who want to help us serve we do another meal just like Thanksgiving and we could certainly use some people too.”

Another way to help is to donate. They are accepting turkeys, fixings, pies and more. Donations can be dropped off at the Shelter at 110 O Street or at the Help Center at 6800 P Street. Cash donations are also welcome and can be made online at pcmlincoln.org and click donate. For more information you can also call 402-475-1303.
