Governor Pete Ricketts has proclaimed November as “Adoption Month” in Nebraska. He and other state officials are raising awareness about the need to help children in foster care find permanent homes.
“We’ve got 646 kids right now that are in our system waiting for those forever families and nationally that number is about $100,000,” Ricketts says.
Last year there were 360 adoptions in the state, but in previous years there were around 500 adoptions a year. “The pandemic has impacted us all in many ways and now, more than ever, we need Nebraskans to consider adoption,” says Stephanie Beasley, DHHS Division of Children and Family Services Director.
Families considering adoption are encouraged to call the Nebraska adoption hotline at 1(800) 7-PARENT (772-7368).
