According to the Nebraska Integrated Solid Waste Management Act, grass and leaves must be separated from household trash from April 1st through November 30th. Grass and leaves are sent to Lincoln’s compost facility. Waste haulers charge a separate fee for the yard waste collection.

Starting Wednesday, December 1st, Lincoln and Lancaster County residents will no longer be required to separate grass and leaves from their household waste. Residents can place yard waste in with their regular trash through March 31st. However, additional fees may be charged for their regular waste collection based on the weight and volume of leaves and grass collected.

During the winter months, residents are encouraged to use the paper lawn bags for leaves and grass to prevent them from freezing to the bottom of plastic garbage or waste cans.
