Two Lancaster County farmers are out hundreds of thousands of dollars after their combines caught fire Monday while harvesting soybeans.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies were called to 148th and Martell Road around 2:50 p.m. That is just south of Bennett. Sheriff Terry Wagner says, “A Gleaner, that is the name of the machine, worth $300,000 caught fire. By the time Bennett Fire arrived it was a total loss.”
About a half-hour later, deputies were called to 176th and Waverly Road for another combine fire. There were two operators on board and they were able to escape without injuries. That combine, a John Deere, was valued at $100,000. That machine too is a total loss.
