Wanted Man Fights With LSO Deputies Inside Courthouse

By Tom Stanton Aug 27, 2021 | 12:39 PM

It was a wild scene inside outside a courtroom at the Hall of Justice Thursday afternoon.   Sheriff Terry Wagner says it began when a man wanted for a sex offender registry violation in Nebraska was spotted by an attorney sitting in a chair in the hallway  awaiting a separate court matter.

Wagner says 45-year-old Steven Butler was approached by a deputy who explained that Butler would be arrested for the warrant regarding the sex offender registry violation.   Wagner says Butler refused to comply and told the deputy that he was not going to be arrested.

Wagner said the deputy summoned help and six deputies assisted in placing Butler in custody, but he didn’t go quietly.  “As soon as they stood him up the fight was on,” Wagner says.  “He was taken to the floor and continued to resist arrest.”  Wagner says one of the deputies used his pepper spray to try and subdue Butler.  But the spray hit another deputy in the face as well as Butler.

Butler was then tased and deputies were able to get the handcuffs on him.  The deputy and Butler were taken to the hospital to be checked out.  Deputies eventually learned Butler had 11 other felony warrants out of Florida for sex offender registry violations.

Wagner says the reason Butler resisted arrest is because he is a truck driver and and had meat to deliver to Florida.  He says the truck was parked down the street with the refrigerator running.  Butler’s dog was also inside the truck with the air conditioner running.  The dog was taken to the humane society.
