A 38 year old man is facing charges after Lincoln Police found him in a running vehicle while doing security checks around 4:00 a.m. Thursday while doing security checks of apartment complexes in the area of SW 26th and W South Street.  Officers were in that area due to a number of thefts from autos and burglaries.

Officers say Daniel Hampton sitting in a vehicle that was running in the 1900 block of SW 27th Street and contacted him.  Officer Erin Spilker says Hampton was exhibiting signs of being under the influence.  The officer requested the assistance of a police service dog due to the behavior that Hampton was demonstrating.

The service dog indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.  Spilker says officers tried to get into the vehicle, but Hampton had locked the doors with the keys inside the vehicle.  Officers were able to get inside without forced entry and found a plastic case under the driver’s seat that contained a pill identified as Morphine Sulfate and two pills identified as Alprazolam.

Spilker says there was also a paper towel that had “Daniel was here” written on it.  Officers also located a hatchet stuck in the trim of the sunroof above the driver’s seat.   Spilker says a knife in plain view was also located.

Hampton was arrested for two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstructing a Police Officer and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
