Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is defending the City’s recent decision to remove a homeless encampment that had been set up in a wooded area just off Sun Valley Blvd
Mayor Gaylor Baird told LNK Today on Tuesday the conditions there were becoming a health and safety issue. “It was very hard to get to for LFR and there was a concern about a fire hazard between the supplies that were being used in the camp and also the level of human waste that was developing over time,” Gaylor Baird says.
She says they worked to make sure they could find alternative arrangements for the people living there. “We worked with our partners in the non-profit community and the Homeless Coalition to reach out to people to try and connect them to services and access to other shelter in advance of any type of cleanup.”
She says they went forward with the clean up after determining the residents of the camp had abandoned the site and moved on.
