Lancaster County Reports First Death From COVID-19 Delta Variant

Health officials are reporting the first death in Lancaster County related to the Delta variant of COVID-19. The woman was in her 40’s. Special testing at the Nebraska Public Health Lab identified the Delta variant.

There were 31 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported Thursday and  22 people are hospitalized.  The health department recently identified additional variant cases in the county. The current total of variant cases is 254.

  • Alpha (B.1.1.7) – first identified in the U.K., 196 cases
  • Beta (B.1.351) – first identified in South Africa, 8 cases
  • Delta (B.1.617) – first identified in India, 20 cases
  • Epsilon (B.1.427/B.1.429) – first identified in California, 21 cases
  • Gamma (P.1) – first identified in Brazil, 6 cases
  • Iota (B.1526) – first identified in New York, 3 cases

Health officials are urging all eligible adults and children to get vaccinated.  There will be a vaccination clinic Friday, July 9 at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department at 3131 “O” Street .  First and second doses will be available.
