Local School Boards Reject Proposed Health Standards

By Karla James Jul 1, 2021 | 11:54 AM

A bipartisan coalition of 30 Nebraska State Senators urged local school boards in Nebraska to adopt resolutions rejecting the proposed Health Education Standards from the Nebraska Department of Education.

After several months of overwhelming opposition, the NDE has not been responsive to the objections and concerns of parents.

The Nebraska Family Alliance and Nebraska Catholic Conference join the majority of the Nebraska Legislature in calling on local school boards to listen to the concerns of parents, adopt resolutions rejecting the proposed Health Standards, retain local control over their school’s health curriculums, and reaffirm the rights of parents as primary educators of their own children.

Statement from Karen Bowling, Executive Director of Nebraska Family Alliance:
“Nebraskans have spoken loudly and clearly. Children are our greatest gifts and they belong to their parents – not the Nebraska Department of Education. Local school boards play an important role in this process and we urge them to exercise their local control by adopting resolutions to reject the proposed health standards and affirm the rights of parents.”

Statement from Jeremy Ekeler, Associate Director of Education Policy for the Nebraska Catholic Conference:
“Countless Nebraskans have expressed their opposition to the comprehensive sex education in the new health standards, which undermine parental rights and sexualize children. Unfortunately, the Nebraska Department of Education has done nothing to address their concerns. If this continues, it will be up to local school boards to respect the rights of parents and protect our kids by adopting resolutions rejecting the proposed health standards.”
