Lincoln Police were called to the 1800 block of Dakota street around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, June 20th on a report of a shooting. Officers were contacted by a 42 year old man who reported he heard a gunshot and then found his mother, 78 year old Janet Kotopka in the living room with a gunshot wound to the head.
Lincoln Fire & Rescue rushed her to a hospital in critical condition. Her injuries are considered life threatening.
Based on evidence and information collected at the scene a probable cause was developed that 80 year old John Kotopka was responsible for the shooting. Kotopka was taken into custody without incident and booked for 1st Degree Assault and Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony. Crime Scene technicians processed the scene for evidence and a firearm was found in the home.
