In an effort to promote awareness of mental health services and raise money for local non-profit CenterPointe, Jack Mitchell, host of 1400 KLIN’s LNK Today with Jack & Friends, is dusting off his walking shoes for a trek across the city of Lincoln. The 2021 Walk of Shame will take place this Friday, June 18th.
It has been nearly ten years since Jack boldly made his first “60-Degree Guarantee”, proclaiming winter was over and temperatures would not go below 60 through the end of the summer. Should his guarantee fail, he promised to walk across the city. Sure enough, a cool late April day meant Jack had to pay, walking that year from Lincoln North Star to Lincoln Southwest High Schools. Since then, repeated failed guarantees means Jack has made four different walks across the city, and one on his treadmill virtually.
Jack has once again made a promise about the weather that he wasn’t able to keep. As his penance, he’ll be walking across the city from 7:00 a.m. to roughly 6:00 p.m. Friday. He will be wearing that same goofy “Husker Power” hat that he has worn for past walks. The 25+ mile route travels from Gateway to Holmes Lake to South Pointe, to Sunken Gardens to the Capitol to Memorial Stadium, and wraps up at Tavern on the Square in the Haymarket.
With every Walk of Shame, Jack aims to have a positive impact on the community. This year, many have been touched by the impact of mental health issues, particularly coming out of the pandemic. To that end, this year’s Walk of Shame will make clear that mental health treatment is anything but shameful and local resources are available to help. Funds will specifically be raised to benefit local nonprofit Centerpointe, an organization that offers treatment to those suffering from anxiety, depression and other mental health issues, regardless of anyone’s ability to pay.
