In an effort to keep kids safe during this excessive heat Lincoln Fire and Rescue is reminding residents to not leave kids in vehicles even for a minute.

“The inside of a vehicle can reach 130 degrees or greater,” says LFR’s Nancy Crist.  That can lead to heat related illnesses and even death.   She says it can be easy for parents to to become distracted when they have a child in the backseat.  “People get so wrapped up in their daily life today that sometimes they are caught out of their routine when they don’t normally drop kids off,” Crist says. “That can create that horrible, horrible scenario.”

Crist says the CDC has recommended putting physical reminders in the backseat.  “Put your purse, or your phone or put your left shoe in the backseat so that it reminds you to be sure your getting those kiddos out of the car.”  Anyone who sees a child in an unattended car seat  should call 911 if there are signs the child is not okay.
