The LPS Board voted Tuesday to name the new high school to be built in southeast Lincoln Standing Bear High School. A committee of 10 community members and three Board members solicited and reviewed suggestions for names of the new high school to be built in near 70th and Saltillo Road. Over 200 names were suggested by more than 600 individuals.
The committee met over the course of several weeks to discuss the submissions and make a recommendation to the Board. The committee unanimously recommended that the new school be named Standing Bear High School. Standing Bear and Lincoln High will be the only two high schools with non-directional names.
Board member Annie Mumgaard acknowledged some of the initial concerns she had as well as community residents and has come to support the name. “I really do think this is a very healthy thing for our community to do” Mumgaard says. “Not only that, long overdue.” The school will open in fall 2023.
