Nebraska baseball’s Spencer Schwellenbach is among 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, as announced by USA Baseball Tuesday.
The award is presented annually to the top amateur baseball player in the nation.
Schwellenbach is the first Husker to be named a semifinalist since Scott Schreiber in 2018. The only player in program history to win the award was Alex Gordon in 2005.
Others to make it this far are Darin Erstad (1995), Ken Harvey (1999), and Johnny Dorn (2008). Erstad and Harvey advanced as finalists.
The Big Ten Player of the Year, Schwellenbach marveled at the Fayetteville Regional over the weekend. He tallied four hits, driving in five RBIs, and scoring a pair of runs himself.
On the mound, he earned the same in Friday’s win over Northeastern, going 1.2 innings to close the door. In his best outing of the season Sunday against Arkansas, Schwellenbach pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out four Razorbacks in a must-win game.
Finalists for the 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be announced June 24 with the winner named in July. Fan voting is part of the process, and can be done here.
