Nebraska ends regular-season with series win over Michigan

Less than a week after clinching the Big Ten Conference title, Nebraska (31-12) avoided a letdown weekend by taking the regular-season finale series 2-1 (1-0, 0-2, 5-3) over Michigan (27-17).

Two regional-quality teams facing off became a showcase of pitching duels.

On Friday, it was Husker Cade Povich spinning 7.0 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in the win over Steve Hajjar, who gave up just one run over 8.0 innings. Saturday saw Wolverine Cameron Weston go 7.0 innings without giving up a run while Chance Hroch gave up just two in his 6.0 innings.

Due to forecasted weather, Sunday’s matchup was tacked onto Saturday to make it a double-header. Although more pitchers were used, Michigan needed a three-run ninth inning to avoid being shutout for the second time on the weekend, but Nebraska still came out victorious 5-3.

The lone run Friday was knocked in by Luke Roskam, who went 1-for-3 as the Huskers managed just four hits on the day. Nebraska topped that number in the first game of the Saturday double-header, but just barely, knocking the ball around for five hits without scoring.

Five runs came in on seven hits in the series finale. Max Anderson led the way with a 2-for-4 game, including a home run and two RBIs. Jaxon Hallmark and Griffin Everitt also added a multi-hit day.

Nebraska finished the regular-season winning 10 of the final 11 games.

With the automatic berth in hand, Nebraska now just awaits its Regional fate. The NCAA Tournament Selection show is slated for 11 am Monday on ESPN2. NCAA Regionals begin June 4.
