Outside the Hall of Justice on Tuesday a Law Enforcement Memorial Service was held to honor fallen officers from LPD and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department.
The ceremony was part of National Police Week. Acting LPD Police Chief Brian Jackson honored the seven officers who have died in the line of duty since 1917. The most recent was Officer Mario Herrera, who was shot last August while serving a warrant at a home near 33rd and Vine. He died two weeks later at an Omaha hospital.
“Our sorrow and anguish over losing Mario may tempt us into believing evil triumphed that bitter day, but that isn’t so,” Jackson said. “Mario’s courage and fortitude conquered the darkness with a light that can never be extinguished.”
Three deputies from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department has lost their lives in the line of duty, the most recent was Craig Dodge, who was shot and killed in Hickman in 1987.
The national Peace Officers Memorial Day is scheduled for Saturday.
