The Voice of Lincoln KLIN has once again been honored as the winner of several awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association.
The Eric Sevareid Awards are named for the North Dakota-born and University of Minnesota-educated journalist best known for his work as a correspondent for CBS Radio and Television. Each year, the MBJA presents awards to the best work done by broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium, and large markets in the six-state region on radio, television, and online
KLIN, competing in Medium Market Radio, earned awards for Newscast, Sports Play-by-Play, Hard Feature, Sportscast/Program, Spot News, and Talk/Public Affairs. The winning entries are below.
Before Jane Monnich retired, she anchored a newscast in February that not only won gold from the Nebraska Broadcaster’s Association last year, but also took first place from the MBJA. Also heard on the newscast is William Padmore, Mark Vail, Jack Mitchell, Chris Lofgreen, and Kaleb Henry.

When fan attendance was limited for high school sports, the KLIN team jumped at the chance to bring prep sports to their airwaves for the first time since the early 2000s and place the game directly in the homes of those who could no longer attend. Kaleb Henry, Kellan Heavican, and Jack Mitchell teamed up to broadcast several Pius X football games, including a Thunderbolt win over North Star which won first place.

A multiple-time winning segment, Storytime with Stai during the Friday Husker Tailgate always delivers laughs and lessons. Two such segments were entered this year, with one bringing the laughs from Brendan Stai’s time being sprayed down in the shower, while the other delved deeper into being “coached up”. Also on the segments are Jack Mitchell and Kaleb Henry.

During the early days of the mask mandate in Lancaster County, not all businesses were quick to comply. One that battled with the health department was Madsen’s Bowling & Billiards, where Kellan Heavican was calling in from just as the health department delivered notices to the building.

When the Big Ten decided to postpone the football season, many were more upset at the lack of transparency in the decision. UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green joined Jack Mitchell on Road to Recovery to give a deeper look into the Big Ten’s decision and how Nebraska was approaching the situation.
