NCAA adopts new transfer legislation

By News Apr 15, 2021 | 3:59 PM

The one-time transfer rule has finally been adopted.

After months of speculation that has looked at the rule as a foregone conclusion, the Division I Council officially announced the rule change Thursday afternoon.

“Allowing student-athletes a one-time opportunity to transfer and compete immediately provides a uniform, equitable and understandable approach that benefits all student-athletes.”

Currently, student-athletes in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, and baseball had to sit out a season upon transferring unless they received a waiver or were a graduate transfer. The legislation must now by ratified by the Division I Board of Directors to be fully in place. The Board meets April 28.

The rule would go into effect beginning in the 2021-22 academic year.

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg said Thursday he believes the rule will be good for his sport.

“I think it’ll give some consistency for the transfers,” Hoiberg said.

For the Huskers, several student-athletes across a few sports would become immediately eligible next season. For football running back Markese Stepp and wide receiver Samori Toure come to mind, as does CJ Wilcher for men’s basketball and Jaz Shelley for women’s basketball.
