Lincoln Police have seen an increase in garage burglaries at apartment complexes in the southeast area of the city.
From 2019 to 2020, police saw an increase of 173%. Garage break-ins in 2018 totaled 12, in 2019 totaled 11 and 2020 31 cases. . The total loss from garages in 2020 is estimated at $20,000. There have been 24 cases so far this year.
As weather warms, more people will be using their garage for outdoor activities. Lincoln Police remind residents to close and lock garages after use.
While the increase in burglaries has been in apartment complex garages, these safety tips apply to all residents with garages. It is easy to forget to check your garage door at the end of the night. Police recommend you set an alarm and make it part of your 9 p.m. routine.
