James Michael Bowers, Lincoln City Councilman for District 1, announced today he is running for the Nebraska legislature in district 46. A lifelong resident of Northeast Lincoln, he has been on the City Council for two years.
His priorities include fixing Nebraska’s child welfare system, planning for our Senior population, and expanding access to health care.

Citing his experience with youth in foster care, Bowers wants a new approach to the state’s embattled child welfare program.
“We need to fix our broken foster care system – I have seen it first hand. Too many kids are falling through the cracks. Privatization was poorly thought out, and our children are being hurt because of it,” Bowers said.
Bowers said he also wants to be proactive about taking care of Lincoln’s seniors.
“In the next decade, we will have more seniors in Lincoln than students in Lincoln Public Schools. We should have a plan to meet their needs,” Bowers said.
Expanding health care access is an area of focus as well. Bowers stated, “Expanding telehealth services during the pandemic was the right call. We need to modernize our health care regulations and bring our state into the 21st century. We have an opportunity to expand access and lower costs.”
State Senator Adam Morfeld, who currently represents district 46, is an early supporter.
“I know James Michael Bowers will fight for working families, for seniors, and to expand health care access. He’ll make a strong impact in the legislature,” said Morfeld.
Lincoln City Councilwoman Tammy Ward also offered her backing, saying “James really works hard for the people in his district; I’ve seen that the last two years on the City Council. I know he’ll take that commitment to the Legislature.”
Bowers earned the support of Current State Senator Eliot Bostar, who said, “James Michael Bowers is the candidate we need to make sure state government works for everyone.”
The Primary election will be held in May of 2022. A formal kickoff event will be held after the city general election.
