Update on LPD Officer Mario Herrera, Critical But Making Small Improvements

By News Sep 4, 2020 | 7:43 AM

Lincoln Police Officer Mario Herrera remains in critical condition at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Herrera underwent another surgery Thursday.

Chief Jeff Bliemeister updated Officer Herrera’s condition on the Road to Recovery while his CaringBridge page indicated there’s improvement.

“The doctors following that particular surgery say they know there’s been some stabilization especially to the abdominal injuries that were significant to Mario.  Right now we’re waiting, we’re praying, we’re hoping as Mario rests and heals.”

Chief Bliemeister says hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for Officer Mario Herrera.

“They are incredibly humbled, grateful for this outpouring of support that has come from so many different facets whether its the thoughts, the prayers from around the world really.”

Chief Bliemiester added blood and monetary donations along with words of encouragement are welcome. The Go Fund Me account is approaching $98,000 dollars.

Preparation and planning by law enforcement was critical to keep Officer Herrera alive according to Bliemeister.

“The decision by the sergeant of the gang unit to put medical on stand-by to get them there that quick, that immediate reassurance and medical care by his co-workers and getting him to Bryan (West), all of that contributed to Mario being alive today.”
